| Monetary Policy and Inflation Credibility [Banking and Finance] |
 |
|

Prof Padayachee and Dr Jannie Rossouw (SARB) have been engaged in on-going research into a number of research questions and topics in inflation, monetary policy and other economic matters in South Africa. In the main their work has focused on understanding more about the credibility of inflation figures and public perceptions about the accuracy of inflation figures. This culminated in the completion of a PhD by Jannie Rossouw under the supervision of Prof Padayachee. One strand of this research, dealing with the assessment of domestic inflation credibility and the development of instruments for its measurement, was published, inter alia, in the SA Journal of Economics and in Central Banking, a specialised international journal published in London. With Ms Adél Bosch of the SARB they have taken this research further by testing for possible linkages between (backward-looking) inflation credibility and (forward-looking) inflation expectations of the South African public. This research was published as an ERSA Working Paper and in the SA Journal of Economic and Management Sciences. Yet another strand is their comparative research of inflation perception measurement in inflation-targeting countries, completed jointly with Mr Fanie Joubert of UNISA. This research was published as a Working Paper of the School of Development Studies at UKZN. Lastly, they have also completed research on trends in public sector remuneration in South Africa that was published in the Tydskrif vir Geesteswetenskappe. This was Prof Padayachee’s first published research in Afrikaans. Participants:
