The aim of the programme is to produce students who are able to analyse, formulate and evaluate alternative development policies as well as to be knowledgeable about alternative development theories. We focus on providing applied skills as well as analytical tools for evaluating comparative development experiences.
One or two-year Programme
The coursework Masters Degree in Development Studies is offered over one or two years and includes a dissertation component. International students in particular should note that depending on the time dedicated to the dissertation, it may extend the completion time of the degree beyond the academic year.
The suitability of an applicant for the one or two-year programme is decided by a selection committee from within the School and is based on Faculty guidelines.
Applicants with a South African Honours degree (equivalent to a four-year undergraduate degree in most other countries) in an appropriate field will be eligible for the one-year (two semester) programme. Applicants with a three-year degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate degree will be eligible for the two-year (four semester) programme.
