PhD: How to Apply and Background to the Programme Print

The School offers a PhD programme (by thesis) in Development Studies and in Population Studies. We have aimed to build a vibrant and active community of PhD scholars, ideally based in Durban, and fully integrated into the academic life of the School. We offer an intellectually rich and exciting, academically supportive and socially generous environment to undertake PhD study.

PhD students are required to undertake a substantive research project that makes an original contribution towards their field of study and demonstrates their mastery of the methodologies they have chosen to use. Candidates can elect to register for Masters level courses in order to develop new skills required for their research.

To view a list of current PhD students in Development Studies and Population Studies see the following page (right hand side of the page), Current PhD students.
For views of the studying here from some past Phd students see past PhD students.

The academic management of the programme resides with the PhD co-ordinators, Dr  Kerry Vermaak (Development Studies) and Professor Pranitha Maharaj (Population Studies), with the support of Student Administrator, Ms Priya Konan.
Please direct any queries to the relevant person.

Application Procedure
For the specific procedure of how to apply, please download the 'Resource' document at the end of this page, which also includes guidelines for writing a two-page proposal which makes up part of your application.
We seek doctoral students who we believe will add considerably to the intellectual spirit of the School of Development Studies and who will participate in the daily academic life and activities of the School. The minimum requirement for admission is an appropriate social science Masters degree with at least an upper second class pass (70% and above).

Please note that, apart from the academic strength of the proposal, two other factors will guide the School’s decision to place prospective applicants into the formal application process. These considerations are:
1. Capacity constraints: this relates to the availability of an appropriate supervisor within the School’s academic staff at the time of application.
2. Theme/topic of research: the proposed thesis should be in a research area where expertise resides within the School’s academic staff.
