Biographical sketch: Professor Richard Ballard has a background in Geography and takes an interest in a variety of social science research. He has worked on issues such as industrial change, urban desegregation, white identity, local democracy, urban social movements and refugees. From 2002-2005 he was project manager for a large project on Social Movements in South Africa which resulted in the 2006 edited volume entitled 'Voices of Protest'. At the same time he was involved in a Leverhulme funded project entitled 'Democracy in Durban' with a group of academics in South Africa and the UK, resulting in articles on local democracy and participatory democracy.  Ongoing research relates to urban social justice and urban inclusion in the post apartheid city.
