Biographical sketch: Professor Richard Ballard has a background in Geography and takes an interest in a variety of social science research. He has worked on issues such as industrial change, urban desegregation, white identity, local democracy, urban social movements and refugees. From 2002-2005 he was project manager for a large project on Social Movements in South Africa which resulted in the 2006 edited volume entitled 'Voices of Protest'. At the same time he was involved in a Leverhulme funded project entitled 'Democracy in Durban' with a group of academics in South Africa and the UK, resulting in articles on local democracy and participatory democracy.
